Unconferences
Unconferences are professional development activities made up on the spot according to individuals’ wants, needs and talents. Attendees are called upon to post to a whiteboard a session on a topic they are interested in learning more about regardless of their expertise in the area. (Padlet or Google Sheets can be used in place of a whiteboard and work well for keeping records of which sessions were offered.) Once the board is full of ideas, teachers can then choose which sessions they want to attend. If they are unsatisfied with a session, they can leave and attend another one. We have used this model when our goal is to share the resources from within our community and generate conversations about topics pertinent to our school. As a follow-up, one person from each group adds notes to a shared document where others can read about the topic.
